Great site!!! Keep the good work. 2 suggestions: (1)Even if the search returned a translation, can you still display a link for a English explanation in the Wester EE dictionary? In this way, people can learn more about the words. (2)Of course, the more words the better.

It'd be extremely useful if your dictionary accepts words with plural and finite verb suffixes as well. For example, currently in your dictionary only "tree" but not "trees" returns results. only "talk" but not "talked" returns results. It's a flaw, though slight, that causes hindrance nonetheless. Inclusion of certain degree of "spelling tolerance/flexibility" would make the dictionary even more excellent and lovable than it already is. Other major online dictionaries like Merriam-Webster and Britannica all have this "tolerant" ability. Keep up the great job!

The CEDICT is a powerful tool, it saved me a lot of time and effort. I am learning to speak mandarin, from time to time I need to know the pinyin for chinese words eg. [jin1 tian1]. Instead of looking up the words in a paper dictionary, I can come to your site, type it in, and in seconds, the pinyin is displayed. Thanks a lot! Keep up the good work!

When I select a word in a page and then click the M-W dictionary bottom on the links list, the word I selected is automatically filled in and the meaning is given. Is it possible to make the E-C dictionary work this way too??? Thanks for your attention, and accepting my last suggestion. :)

this site is exactly what i was looking for. with some paste and copy it helps me to find my way out as a novice. one suggestion: sometimes it is difficult to know the exact character groupings in chinese, so some of my queries don't return any result. i would suggest that the characters be split up in that case and submitted as separate queries or that parts of the word would be used as "suggested query", very much as it works for the E-C dictionary. just an idea ...

The description of the Chinese character is: it looks like a crab with it's tail caught in a trap. I was wondering where this is in your dictionary. I suppose the characters were older or a different version of Chinese thatn those in your dictionary.

Interesting... In looking up the word "prosecute" in Chinese, three Chinese terms were rendered, but none appeared to pertain, or otherwise represent, "prosecute". In fact, the second term in Chinese so rendered here represents "Indictment", which is not exactly the same as "Prosecution". In general, one may not be, at least in America, be prosecuted until and unless one is first indicted. Can this be a careless typo, or a gross mistranslation?

Suggestion: you can use your current technique to make such a service: people enter a URL (say, sina.com.cn) and your program translate all GB or BIG5 into GB_gif or BIG5_gif. this will help those people who don't have Chinese platform. believe me, there are still a lot of people don't have it at work or at school.

PROBLEM: When two words of the same spelling exist, your dictionary only reveals the first entry. Example: "novel", which means "new" as an adjective, but means a literary genre when being used as a noun. Same duality/multitude exists in words like "lie", "bark" and "beam". There're countless other words like it. I'm sure your dictionary contains those other hidden entries as well, but how do we see those? Great dictionary! Keep the good work up!
You are right. I missed it for some technical reason. Please email me what you have found. Thank you. 亡羊补狼为时未晚 right? -- hxin

oh my god, what's your difference between chinese-english and english-chinese, when all your output are chinese! i need to know what's the english for chinese term: ~{>m3_~}, but your dictionary can only return chinese! what's your purpose? i m really puzzled!
I am confused too. Every C-E lookup returns Chinese with English meaning if there is a matched entry. Every E-C lookup returns English with Chinese meaning if there is a matched entry. I see the difference. Do you?
BTW, what you are looking for is "Tape Ruler". -- hxin

Great site. I use this site as my online dictionary. it really helps a lot. Actually I think if you put both search inputs(E-C and C-E) in the first page, it would be easier for people to search without click to the second page.

Thanks for your help in getting the chinese translation for 'cholesterol' in Standard Chinese characters (Big5 Image). I don't think too much of the simplified character set. Years ago, I worked in the financial industry and somebody had some Chinese sentences in Standard Chinese (traditional). He asked a couple of mainland Chinese and some Chinese Americans to translate. None of them could read the characters. The mainlanders could only make out some of the characters while the Chinese Americans couldn't recognize any of them. In frustration he went over to a Japanese lady to translate!! She understood them and translated into English!! That was pretty embarrassing!! Thanks again!

First time to here. This the best on-line English-Chinese dictionary among those I have found. Hope the collected words can grow with time. Lemming is word I was looking for. Many concepts I have learned in Chinese can only be recollected by looking it up in E/C dictionaries. Keep up the good work and best wishes, Frank
